Why Nostalgia Matters

No matter if it was walking along the beach on the summer vacation your parents planned for months, being the first to open the new box of cereal to get the toy, or getting a gum ball out of a machine at the mall, scent evokes so many memories of what used to be. Familiar scents take us back to when times were simpler. No cell phones, not many people had internet, the house phone hung strictly on the kitchen wall. And if you were anything like my house was, it was in an old timey box that was to hide the phone inside…. another phone? Teenagers paged each other things like 911…. because they wanted to meet up later and “spill the tea” as the kids say now. The only “DM” were on AOL or MSN and could only be accessed when on the internet, so if mom needed to call Aunt Betty, you may as well forget about it for at least an hour. Times were simple. We talked to each other in person, not via text. We went outside and stayed out until the streetlights came on. We came home with bruises and scraped up knees, not because we were doing anything bad, but because we played! Boomers, Gen X and Millennials were born before the internet and we remember these times! This is why I make candles, wax melts, soaps, car and room fresheners that evoke the feeling of simpler times. To remember.
